Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Earns A 1-1 Draw With Eastern Mennonite Saturday Afternoon

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (3-10-3, 1-6-2) battled for 110 minutes with Eastern Mennonite University (1-13-1, 0-7-1 ODAC) to a 1-1 tie at the EMU Turf Field in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action Saturday afternoon.

The Royals got on the board at the 10:02 mark of the game. Rachel Breidigan collected a cross that was deflected by the E&H defense and put it home from close range, giving EMU the 1-0 lead.

Emory & Henry pushed its offense forward, leaded 9-3 on shots in the opening 45 minutes and finally broke through to tie the match, 1-1, with 1:58 to go before halftime. Sophomore midfielder Christina Ameen (Sweetwater, Tenn.) served a long pass to the back side of the play which fell perfectly to freshman forward Gillian Hogg (Richmond, Va.). Hogg tapped her attempt past the goalkeeper for her fourth goal of the year, tying for the team lead.

The second half saw the Wasps continue to hold an advantage over play, outshooting the Royals 11-7 including a 6-4 margin in shots on goal. There would be no scoring, however and Emory & Henry would move to extra time for the third time on the season.

E&H's previous two adventures into overtime went down as scoreless draws, but with a goal on the board already, the Wasps felt confident they would come out on top in the next 20 minutes of play.

Emory & Henry dominated the first extra period with five shots and an attempt on frame, but the EMU defense held solid, pushing the match time past 100 minutes.

The second overtime saw the Royals' offense come alive putting up four shots including a pair on goal, however the match would go nearly 67 minutes as a 1-1 tie and be recorded as the Wasps' third ODAC draw of the season.

Ameen finished with a match-high six shots including four on goal while senior midfielder Blair Vaughn (Gate City, Va.) had five shots and two attempts on frame. Hogg ended her day with four shots, including the difference maker for E&H. Freshman goalkeeper Kieran Liseski (Mooresville, N.C.) made six saves, playing all 110 minutes.

EMU's Sierra Martin and Hannah Walker each had three shots to lead the Royals while Breidigan put both of her attempts on frame including the 11th minute goal. Becca Borg made 10 saves in goal to earn the tie.

Emory & Henry held a 25-14 advantage on shots in the game, including a 12-7 margin on shots on goal. The Wasps also took 14 corner kicks compared to just six for the Royals.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road on Wednesday when it travels to Lexington, Virginia for an ODAC matchup against Washington and Lee. Kickoff between the Wasps and Generals is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
