Women's Soccer: Season in Review

Women's Soccer: Season in Review

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry women's soccer team finished off the season with a 3-12-3 (1-8-2 ODAC), giving them a tenth place finish in the conference.   The Wasps did make notable strides this season, especially on defense.  This season, the Wasps allowed 21 less goals than the previous year, thanks in part to a change in the formation.  The 31 goals allowed are the fewest in E&H women's soccer history.

Sophomore Kayla Wright was in goal in 16 games on the season, starting 13 of them.  Wright improved her save percentage to .774, saves to 82, and goals allowed average 1.80.  She tallied 10 or more saves in three matches while earning two shut outs.  Also helping on the defensive side was senior Maria Byrd and junior Willow Hubbard.  Byrd, who was a three-year captain, started in all 67 games that she played in her career.  She was the anchor for the Wasps team that set the standard for defense.  Hubbard, who has started 49 of 53 matches in her career, has also been a staple for a suffocating Wasps defense.  Sophomore April Yopp and freshman Kori Potter added pieces to the puzzle on defense starting 16 and 11 matches, respectively.

At midfield, senior Emily Belanger started in all 16 matches in which she played.  The Tampa, Florida native scored two goals and tallied an assist in her final year, bringing her career total to twelve goals and three assists. Fellow senior Blair Vaughn split time at midfield and forward for the Wasps and finished her final season with two goals and two assists.  Junior Baylee Dozark was a staple for the Wasps as well.  On the season, Dozark played in 17 games, starting eight, while picking up an assist in a 13-1 victory over Hollins. Sophomore midfielders Clarissa Martin and Kelsey Little each scored a goal while starting twelve and eight games, respectively.  Junior Sam Sampson and sophomore Christina Ameen netted three goals each for the Wasps from their midfield positions.

The Wasps were led in goals by two freshmen this season.  With four goals each, Gillian Hogg and Sarah Safrit accounted for much of the offensive output for E&H.  Three of Safrit's four goals came in a 13-1 win over Hollins University. In that game, sophomore Daishi Dudley and freshman Robbi Rodemann netted two goals of their own as well, while junior Emily Welch tallied two assists.
