EMORY, Va. - Emory & Henry College head women's soccer coach Lisa Buckley has announced the hiring of Filipe Barateiro as an assistant coach.

A native of Cascais, Portugal, Barateiro joins the Wasps' coaching staff from King (Tenn.) University, where he was both the men's & women's assistant/goalkeeper coach for the 2020-21 academic year. He was responsible for planning practices, producing game plans for opposing teams and monitoring academic eligibility. In addition to his day-to-day responsibilities, Barateiro was also responsible for recruiting and fundraising.

"Bringing in coaches from other cultures is great for our team and our department," commented Buckley. "It allows for a new and different perspective not only on what to coach but how to coach it. Filipe brings with him experience coaching in both Portugal and the U.S., giving him a broad spectrum of knowledge."

During his time as an undergraduate, Barateiro also coached in the Knox County (Ky.) school system. He spent the 2019-20 at Knox County Middle as the head boys' soccer coach and the 2018-19 season in the same role at Knox County High School.

"I am very excited to join Emory & Henry, especially during the transition to the NCAA Division II," said Barateiro. "I would like to thank Coach Buckley and E&H for believing in my work and giving me this opportunity. I cannot wait to start working and help to improve the women's soccer program."

Barateiro coached with Dragon Force Youth Academy of F.C. Porto, one of the largest youth academies in Portugal from August 2015 to July 2017. He worked with the U-10, U-16 and U-18 teams, also selecting and coordinating interns for the U-10 program.

As a player, Barateiro was a three-year starter in goal for Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. During his time with the Bulldogs, he helped lead the team to the Appalachian Athletic Conference title in 2019 and a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. Over his career, Barateiro earned 14 wins, made 133 saves and had a 1.38 goals-allowed average. He also played academy soccer for Groupo Desportivo Estoril Praia in Lisbon, Portugal from 2001 to 2020.

Barateiro earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management from Union in 2020 and a Master of Business Administration from King (Tenn.) University in 2021. He holds National "D" and "F" Licenses as well as 11v11 and 9v9 Grassroots Licenses from the United States Soccer Federation.
