EMORY, Va. – Emory & Henry College Director of Athletics Anne Crutchfield has announced that Filipe Barateiro has been elevated to the position of Head Women's Soccer Coach. Barateiro will assume the head coaching duties immediately.

"We have had great success in women's soccer over the past year and Filipe was a huge part of that. We are excited for the future of the program and what is in store as we continue our transition," said Crutchfield.

Barateiro takes over a program which posted its first winning season since 2011 and its best winning percentage in program history as the Wasps went 9-3-2 last fall. The team's nine victories also ties for fourth-most in program history in a single season.

"I'm very grateful for the opportunity to take over the women's soccer program after having an incredible season last year with Coach Buckley," commented Barateiro. "I would like to thank Anne for believing in my work and trusting me to develop the program. Joining the SAC is a massive step for our institution and soccer program, and we cannot wait to get it started."

Barateiro joined the Emory & Henry staff under then-Head Coach Lisa Buckley in the fall of 2021 after serving on the coaching staff at King (Tenn.) University. He also has coaching experience at the club and high school level in Knox County, Kentucky and in his native Portugal.

As a player, Barateiro was a three-year starter in goal for Union College in Barbourville, Kentucky. During his time with the Bulldogs, he helped lead the team to the Appalachian Athletic Conference title in 2019 and a spot in the NAIA National Tournament. Over his career, Barateiro earned 14 wins, made 133 saves and had a 1.38 goals-allowed average. He also played academy soccer for Groupo Desportivo Estoril Praia in Lisbon, Portugal from 2001 to 2020.

Barateiro earned a Bachelor of Science degree in sport management from Union in 2020 and a Master of Business Administration from King (Tenn.) University in 2021. He holds National "D" and "F" Licenses as well as 11v11 and 9v9 Grassroots Licenses from the United States Soccer Federation and is currently pursuing his "C" License.
