Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Tops King, 2-1, For First Win Of The Year Sunday

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (1-1) picked up its first win of the season on Sunday afternoon as they defeated nearby rival King (Tenn.) University (0-3) by a score of 2-1.

How It Happened
- The Tornado started the game on the front foot, as they recorded two shots on goal in the first ten minutes of the game that resulted in two saves for senior goalkeeper Natalie Capone (Kannapolis, N.C.).
- The Wasps responded in the 25th minute of the game when senior forward Amber Altice (Rocky Mount, Va.) put in a cross from the right wing that was nodded on by senior forward Adrienne Harris (Hillsville, Va.) and finished on a first-time volley by junior Maddie Hummel (Spotsylvania, Va.) to give the Wasps the 1-0 lead at the halftime break.
- King struck back in the 71st minute when a cross from Mackenzie Winters found the foot of Brianna Sabatino to equalize the game at 1-1.
- The Wasps were able to break the deadlock in the 84th minute. Senior Grace Williams (Earlysville, Va.) provided a corner kick service into the 18-yard box that Harris headed past the Tornado keeper to give E&H the 2-1 lead, which they held until the final whistle.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Harris led the offensive effort for the Wasps with a goal and an assist, both firsts on the young season.
- Hummel contributed two shots to add to her second career goal while Altice and Williams both registered their first points of the season with an assist each.
- Senior goalkeeper Capone recorded six saves in between the sticks to pace the defense. 

King (Tenn.) Individual Leaders
- Veronica Roach led the Tornado with three shots, one of which was on target. Sabatino's goal was the first of the season for King and the first of her career.
- Kristal Garcia made one save in goal, playing the full 90 minutes.

Up Next
- Emory & Henry travels to Salisbury, North Carolina on Wednesday to make its South Atlantic Conference debut against Catawba College. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m., as the first contest of a doubleheader with the Wasps' men's team.
