Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Downs Bluefield State, 3-1, Tuesday On The Road

BLUEFIELD, W. Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (2-3) picked up a non-conference road victory on Tuesday night, as the Wasps dispatched Bluefield State University (2-4) by a score of 3-1.

How It Happened
- The match began as a physical back-and-forth affair with both squads creating scoring chances that were denied by the opposing defenses. The Lady Blues held the majority of the possession throughout the first stanza and outshot the Wasps by a margin of 10 to five, including six on goal compared to just two for E&H.
- The Wasps opened the scoring in the 53rd minute when senior midfielder Olivia Haynes (Spotsylvania, Va.) played a long ball over the BSU defenders that found the feet of freshman forward Maria Wilson (Bristol, Va.). Wilson calmly slotted the ball past the goalkeeper into the back of the net for a 1-0 lead.
- E&H doubled their lead in the 68th minute on a bit of magic from junior forward Maddie Hummel (Spotsylvania, Va.). Senior forward Amber Altice (Rocky Mount, Va.) provided a cross into the box from the right side of the field that Hummel met with her right foot for a smash volley goal past the Big Blue keeper to make it 2-0.
- The Wasps added a third goal in the 72nd goal on another long ball, this time from sophomore midfielder Karlijn Koeters (The Hague, NETHERLANDS) to the feet of freshman forward Hailey Hamilton (Elkwood, Va.) who beat the keeper once more for the 3-0 margin.
- Bluefield State would draw back within two goals in the 80th minute on a tally from Karina Fuhrmann assisted by Ava Jakich-Kunze to bring the match to its final score of 3-1. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Wilson, Hummel and Hamilton led the attack with one goal apiece. Altice registered three shots, including one on target, to go along with her assist.
- Senior goalkeeper Natalie Capone (Kannapolis, N.C.) led the defensive effort for the Wasps with 10 saves in net.

Bluefield State Individual Leaders
- Martina Cardemil and Kira Zoeller each recorded three shots to lead the Big Blue. Fuhrmann scored the lone goal and Jakich-Kunze had the only assist.
- Rylee Truslow made five saves in goal for BSU.

- Emory & Henry returns to Fred Selfe Stadium at Nicewonder Field on Sunday, September 18 when they play host to Newberry College to wrap up Sports Hall of Fame Induction Weekend. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:00 p.m,. as the first part of a doubleheader with the men's soccer team.
