Newberry Women’s Soccer Defeats Emory & Henry, 3-0, Sunday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. - The Newberry College Women's Soccer Team (2-4-1, 1-1 SAC) picked up a 3-0 South Atlantic Conference victory over Emory & Henry College (2-4, 0-3 SAC) Sunday afternoon. It was the first home conference match for E&H as a member of the SAC.

How It Happened
- Both teams battled back-and-forth to begin the match as both defenses were up to the task early. The Wolves outshot the Wasps in the first stanza by a margin of 12-2 but were held scoreless until the 42nd minute. Jacqueline Aldrete stepped up to take a free kick after a Wasps' foul from thirty yards out. She banged a shot off of the post into the back of the net to give Newberry the 1-0 lead at the half.
- Newberry kept the defensive intensity up in the second half, as they pressed the Wasps to create turnovers and test Emory & Henry's defense. The Wolves added a second goal in the 64th minute on a corner kick from Aldrete to the head of Becca Lipp to make it 2-0. Lipp added her second of the afternoon in the 89th minute, this time on an assist from Monica Jimenez to send the score to its final at 3-0.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Junior forward Adrienne Harris (Hillsville, Va.) led the Wasps with two shots, one of which found the target. Junior forward Maddie Hummel (Spotsvylvania, Va.), senior defender Ashlee Jordan (Boones Mill, Va.) and freshman defender Elise Buonocore (Stephens City, Va.) each recorded a shot for E&H.
- Senior goalkeeper Natalie Capone (Kannapolis, N.C.) recorded nine saves in between the sticks to pace the Wasps. 

Newberry Individual Leaders
- Lipp led the Wolves with a brace on five shots while Aldrete had a goal and an assist on four shots. Jaidyn Jacobs registered nine shots and Ariana Paez had three shots, all of which were on target.
- Kalee Opalka and Ashley Guillot combined in goal for the shutout. 

Up Next
- The Wasps will host Carson-Newman University on Wednesday for another South Atlantic Conference showdown. The women's team will play the first part of a doubleheader with the men's team, with kickoff scheduled for 5:00 p.m.
