Shaw Women's Soccer Defeats Emory & Henry, 2-0, Thursday Evening

EMORY, Va. - The Shaw University Women's Soccer Team (1-0) handed Emory & Henry College (0-1) a season-opening loss on Thursday afternoon at Fred Selfe Stadium. The Lady Bears took the victory by a 2-0 margin.

How It Happened
- Both teams got out to a positive start as they each registered shots on goal, forcing their respective starting goalkeepers to make important early saves to keep the game scoreless. Shaw struck first in the 13th minute as Johanna Lillja collected a bouncing ball and slid a shot past E&H keeper Adriana Rehg (Talbott, Tenn.) to make it 1-0 in favor of the visitors. The squads traded scoring opportunities late in the half but the score stood heading into the break.
- The Wasps turned up the pressure in the second half as they fired shot after shot on the Shaw goal, but goalkeeper Paige Ellis came up big for the Lady Bears to keep E&H off of the scoreboard. Shaw increased its lead to 2-0 in the 84th minute when Giovanna Coghetto settled another errant bouncing ball and guided a shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0. Despite a 10-3 E&H shot advantage in the second half, the Lady Bears held on for the victory. 

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior Adrienne Harris (Hillsville, Va.) led the way with four shots, all of which found their target. Junior Karlijn Keuters (The Hague, NETHERLANDS) and junior Lucy Dunlop (York, ENGLAND) each recorded a pair of shots. Rehg recorded three saves in net for the Wasps.

Shaw Individual Leaders
- Lillja and Coghetto tallied the two scores for the Lady Bears in the winning effort. Natalya Rubiano Gonzalez recorded three shots on the afternoon. Ellis finished the match with seven saves and a shutout in between the pipes. 

Up Next
- The Wasps return to action on Tuesday, September 5 when they make the short trek to take on border rival King (Tenn.) University. Kickoff is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Parks Field in Bristol, Tennessee.
