Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Downs Bluefield State, 3-2, Saturday At Home

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (1-1-1) dodged the raindrops and outlasted a weather delay to take home its first win of the 2023 season against Bluefield State University (2-2) on Saturday evening. The Wasps topped the Big Blues by a 3-2 final score.

How It Happened
- The Wasps started the match on the front foot, as they fired six shots at the Bluefield State net in the first 17 minutes of play but the tally remained scoreless. Senior forward Adrienne Harris (Hillsville, Va.) opened up the scoring in the 20th minute with her first goal of the season to make it 1-0. The margin would hold until the halftime break.
- Freshman forward Maddie Simmons (Roanoke, Va.) increased the lead to 2-0 in the 51st minute with the first collegiate goal of her career. Harris added another in the 54th minute on an assist from junior midfielder Karlijn Keuters (The Hague, NETHERLANDS) as the Wasps saw their advantage swell to 3-0.
- Bluefield State quickly responded with a goal from Carmen Galante in the 56th minute and Ava Jakich-Kunze made it 3-2 in the 65th minute. E&H held off the attack from the Big Blues after a delay for weather to hold on for the 3-2 win

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Harris led the offensive attack for the Wasps with her brace of goals on four shots. Simmons had the other goal on six shots, four of which found the target.
- Freshman goalkeeper Ava Puskas (Chesapeake, Va.) earned her first collegiate win with one save in net. 

Bluefield State Individual Leaders
- Jakich-Kunze and Galante accounted for the two goals for Bluefield State. They combined for six shots during the afternoon.
- Rylee Truslow made six saves for Bluefield State in the losing effort. 

Up Next
- The Wasps continue out of conference play on Wednesday when they host the Belmont Abbey College Crusaders. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. at Fred Selfe Stadium.
