Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Shuts Out Bluefield State, 1-0, Wednesday Evening

BLUEFIELD, W.Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (2-3-3, 0-2-1 SAC) completed the season sweep of Bluefield State University (2-5) with a 1-0 shutout win on Wednesday evening at East River Soccer Complex.

How It Happened
- The two teams traded chances in the opening 25 minutes of play, but the Wasps would break through first. Freshman midfielder Charlotte Stavis (Charlotte, N.C.) pushed E&H ahead in the 28th minute when she settled a pass from sophomore midfielder Hailey Hamilton (Elkwood, Va.) and lofted a beautiful shot over the outstretched arms of the Bluefield State goalkeeper to make it 1-0. Freshman goalkeeper Sophia Wagner (Front Royal, Va.) came up big with back-to-back saves just before the half to preserve the 1-0 advantage.

- Bluefield State turned up the pressure in the second half as they recorded the first six shots of the stanza, but the Wasps were up to the task and kept the Big Blues off of the scoreboard. E&H would stave off any further Bluefield State attempts and finish off the shutout for the 1-0 victory.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Stavis tallied the lone goal of the evening on a pair of shots on target. Hamilton had the assist for her first point of the season. Senior forward Adrienne Harris (Hillsville, Va.) also posted two shots on goal in the win.

- Wagner finished the match with six saves, earning her first collegiate win and shutout. 

Bluefield State Individual Leaders
- Martina Cardemil, Casey McNulty and Rachel Major led BSU with two shots each. 

- Rylee Truslow had six saves in net in the losing effort. 

Up Next
- Emory & Henry returns to South Atlantic Conference action this Saturday, September 30 when it makes the trip to take on the Trojans of Anderson University. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. as the first game of a doubleheader with the men's team.
