Emory & Henry Women's Soccer Routs Virginia State, 9-1, On Senior Day

EMORY, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Soccer Team (3-7-5, 0-6-3 SAC) defeated Virginia State University (2-10-2) in non-conference action by a 9-1 scoreline on Wednesday afternoon. It is the most goals scored in a game by the E&H women's program since a 10-0 victory over Sweet Briar College during the 2017 season. The Wasps also honored seniors Adrienne Harris (Hillsville, Va.) and Sophie Graham (Radford, Va.) during the pregame ceremonies.

How It Happened
- The Wasps were first on the scoreboard in the seventh minute when freshman forward Madie Beale (Virginia Beach, Va.) tallied an unassisted goal to give E&H the early 1-0 lead. The home team increased its lead to two in the 37th minute when sophomore defender Olivia DaSilva (Newton, N.J.) headed home her first goal in an E&H uniform on an assist from freshman forward Karolyn Valko (Danville, Ky.). Freshman midfielder Taylor Wallace (Bristol, Va.) rounded out the first-half scoring for Emory & Henry in the 40th minute after some fancy footwork and a beautiful pass from fellow freshman midfielder Charlotte Stavis (Charlotte, N.C.) found Wallace, who slotted the ball home for the 3-0 halftime lead.
- Freshman forward Lexi McNamee (Chesapeake, Va.) scored her first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute on an assist from sophomore forward Riley Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va.) to increase the margin to 4-0 and Wallace scored her second of the day just four minutes later on a beauty of a strike from nearly 35 yards away that kissed in off of the crossbar to run the lead to 5-0. Virginia State got a goal back in the 57th minute on an unassisted score from Alana Martin to trim the deficit to 5-1. Harris got on the scoresheet on Senior Day in the 69th minute on a corner kick assisted by Stavis, and Valko made it 7-1 in the 71st minute on an unassisted tally. Sophomore forward Maria Wilson (Bristol, Va.) recorded her first goal of the season in the 86th minute on an assist from Harris, and Wilson returned the favor a minute later as she fed Harris who buried a shot in the net to close out the scoring at the 9-1 final.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Harris led the Wasps with nine shots, seven of which found their target. Junior midfielder Karlijn Keuters (The Hague, NETHERLANDS) registered four shots during the match while Beale fired three attempts of her own.
- Freshman goalkeepers Sophia Wagner (Front Royal, Va.) and Ava Puskas (Chesapeake, Va.) each registered a save in goal while sophomore Adriana Rehg (Talbott, Tenn.) played the final thirty minutes for the Wasps.

Virginia State Individual Leaders
- Martin and Danica Carter each fired five shots apiece at the Emory & Henry net.
- Kendall Burney posted nine saves in net for the Trojans in the losing effort. 

Up Next
- Emory & Henry returns to South Atlantic Conference play Saturday, October 28 when they host the Lady Catawba Indians of Catawba College. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as game two of a conference doubleheader with the men's team.
