Emory & Henry Women’s Soccer Defeats Shaw, 1-0, For Season-Opening Win

DURHAM, N.C. - The Emory & Henry University Women's Soccer Team (1-0, 0-0 SAC) got its 2024 regular season underway with a shutout road victory over Shaw University (0-1) Thursday afternoon. The Wasps defeated the Lady Bears by a 1-0 margin, avenging a loss from last season.

The Basics
FINAL SCORE – Emory & Henry 1, Shaw 0
LOCATION – Durham, North Carolina
VENUE – Durham County Memorial Stadium
RECORDS – Emory & Henry (1-0, 0-0 SAC); Shaw (0-1)

How It Happened
- The Wasps had the first scoring opportunity of the game in the sixth minute as a bouncing ball fell to sophomore midfielder Charlotte Stavis (Charlotte, N.C.), who fired a shot just outside of the post to keep the game scoreless. The game was back-and-forth through the middle stages of the opening half as both teams looked to find their footing in the first game of the season. Neither squad could find the back of the net and the match went into the halftime break deadlocked at 0-0.
- E&H began the second half on the front foot, firing a pair of shots at the Shaw goal in the opening four minutes of play. Both defenses settled in and the offensive chances were few and far between as the visitors from Emory maintained the majority of possession. The Wasps finally broke through on the scoreboard in the 80th minute. A Shaw foul gave E&H a free kick 33 yards from goal. Stavis fired a shot on target that was parried by the goalkeeper straight into the path of senior midfielder Karlijn Keuters (The Hague, NETHERLANDS), who buried a shot to give the Wasps the 1-0 lead. The E&H defense stood strong throughout the remainder of the match to hold on for the win.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Keuters and junior forward Alexa Dubrow (Fort Mill, S.C.) lead the Wasps with a pair of shots each, with both of Keuters' efforts finding the target. Stavis was credited with two shots and an assist while sophomore defender Bella Fairley (Chesapeake, Va.) recorded the other shot for E&H.
- Sophomore goalkeeper Sophia Wagner (Front Royal, Va.) made one save in net to earn the win and post her second career shutout.
- The starting back line of Fairley and junior defenders Olivia DaSilva (Newton, N.J.), Elise Buonocore (Stephens City, Va.) and Dylan Copeland (Salem, Va.) helped preserve the shutout and earn the win.

Shaw Individual Leaders
- Shaw had five different players record shots on the afternoon, with Frida Lang's effort finding its target.
