How It Happened
- The Wasps began the match on the front foot, firing three shots in the direction of the Bluefield State goal in the opening 14 minutes of play. E&H broke through in the 15th minute. Sophomore forward Charlotte Stavis (Charlotte, N.C.) put a curling ball into the box on a corner kick that found the head of senior midfielder Lucy Dunlop (York, ENGLAND), who found the back of the net to give the Wasps the 1-0 advantage. The home team continued to put pressure on the BSU back line as they had another three attempts over the following 15 minutes, including a shot from Stavis that struck the woodwork, but could not increase their lead. BSU could only keep Stavis at bay for so long however as she tallied her eighth goal of the season in the 36th minute on a peach of an assist from junior forward Kaleea Scales (Maryville, Tenn.) to push the Wasps margin out to 2-0. The Wasps held a 10-1 advantage on shots and took the two-goal lead into the half.
- E&H picked up where they left off to begin the second stanza as they had four shots at goal in the first 20 minutes, including three attempts from senior forward Riley Firebaugh (Roanoke, Va.), but Bluefield State goalkeeper Kaycee Cote kept her team in the match with a pair of big saves. The Wasps capitalized on another corner kick in the 69th minute when Stavis found sophomore defender Olivia Hudson (Cookeville, Tenn.), who nodded home a ball that nestled into the net for her first career collegiate goal to run the margin out to 3-0. E&H notched a fourth in the 85th minute on another corner. Scales recycled a ball that was saved by Cote and used the outside of her right foot to slice a shot that hit the crossbar and crossed the goal line to give the Wasps the 4-0 advantage. The home team fired seven more shots in the final four minutes and change, but settled for the four-goal win.
