Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Picked Second In ODAC Coaches’ Poll

FOREST, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team has been picked to finish second at the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championships, ODAC officials announced Friday. The poll is voted on by each of the league's nine coaches. The Wasps also received one of the league's nine first-place votes.

E&H has leapt into the top tier of ODAC swimming in just its second year as a varsity program. With only freshmen and sophomores, the Wasps still do not have a full roster, as the league scores 18 swimmers per school in the championship meet.

Emory & Henry returns five of its seven swimmers from last year's squad and welcomes eight freshmen to the team. Highlighting the returners is sophomore Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.), who was the 2013 ODAC Champion in the 50-yard and 100-yard freestyle, putting up a league-record time of :23.98 in the 50.

Sophomore Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.) also returns and was the runner-up in the 200-yard individual medley a year ago. Sophomore Nicole Powell (Apex, N.C.) earned Third-Team All-ODAC honors a year ago and returns as well for E&H.

Washington and Lee University is picked to win the league for the seventh-straight year with 64 points and eight first-place votes. The Generals currently have 23 ODAC championships under their caps. Randolph-Macon College is third with 53 points, just one point behind Emory & Henry (54).

Bridgewater College and Sweet Briar College are fourth and fifth with 42 points and 33 points, respectively. Greensboro College, Notre Dame of Maryland University, Hollins University and Guilford College round out the poll.

Emory & Henry will open the 2013-14 season at the 2013 ODAC Relays hosted by Washington and Lee on Saturday, October 19. The first gun is set for noon.
