Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Finishes Second At 2014 ODAC Championships

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team finished the 2014 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship strong Sunday night, winning three more events and finishing second in the team standings.

Freshman Allison Fowler (Morristown, Tenn.) was named ODAC Swimmer of the Year while freshman Michaela Nolte (Hillsborough, N.C.) took home ODAC Rookie of the Year honors. Both swimmers won two of their three individual events, set multiple E&H and league records and earned NCAA "B" Qualifying Standards in the process.

Emory & Henry started things off with the final heat of the 1650-yard freestyle. Sophomore Taylor Guardalabene (Charlotte, N.C.) finished third with a time of 18:24.65. Sophomore Nicole Powell's (Apex, N.C.) and freshman Lauren Blakey's (Davidson, N.C.) swims Sunday morning were good for seventh and 16th place, respectively.

In the 200-yard backstroke, the Wasps had a pair of swimmers in the final led by freshman Liz Kleveno (Fredericksburg, Va.), who came in fifth (2:10.51). Freshman Jordan Greenburg (Cordova, Tenn.) was close behind in sixth with a swim of 2:11.43 while freshman Olivia Shumate (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) finished 10th with her swim in the consolation final.

The Wasps took second and third in the 100-yard freestyle as freshman Jessica Richardson (Vero Beach, Fla.) swam a :53.38 for runner-up honors and sophomore Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.)  went :53.50 for third. Sophomore Sam Brown (Memphis, Tenn.) was 12th in the event as well.

Nolte swept the breaststroke events with an ODAC-record swim of 2:22.81, finishing 6.29 seconds ahead of second place. She bettered her NCAA "B" cut that she earned in the prelims by nearly three tenths of a second. Freshman Kia Hamilton (Memphis, Tenn.) and sophomore Sophia Alonge (Vienna, Va.)  were 12th and 13th overall.

Fowler made it two event wins as well with a meet-record swim of 2:07.81 in the 200-yard butterfly. Her time also was good enough for a national "B" cut. Powell recorded a swim of 2:17.27 to finish sixth.

The final event of the meet was the 400-yard freestyle relay. Seeded second behind Washington and Lee University, Emory & Henry stayed close the entire race before Nolte brought the Wasps' sixth event win of the weekend home. The relay consisted of Richardson, Shirey, Fowler and Nolte and marked yet another ODAC record, just .44 off a NCAA standard.

Washington and Lee won the league championship for the seventh-straight year with a total of 953 points. Emory & Henry's 585 points closed the gap between first and second by 117 points over last season. Randolph-Macon College was third (481) while Sweet Briar College (349) rounded out the top four.

The 2013-14 All-ODAC Teams will be released by the league office on Monday.
