Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Finishes Second At ODAC Relays To Open Season

LEXINGTON, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Swimming Team saw its first action of the 2014-15 season as it finished second out of nine teams at the ODAC Relays Saturday afternoon. Though only three of the 10 events were NCAA sanctioned, the meet served as the unofficial kickoff for Old Dominion Athletic Conference swimming.

Host Washington and Lee University won the meet while Randolph-Macon College, Bridgewater College and Hollins University rounded out the top five.

The Wasps won the 3x50-yard butterfly relay as junior Payton Shirey (Seaford, Del.), sophomore Jessica Richardson (Vero Beach, Fla.) and freshman Mackenzie Lingle (Roanoke, Va.) swam a time of 1:22.39 to defeat W&L by six-tenths of a second.

E&H was second in eight races and saw its "B" relays notch five top-four finishes on the afternoon.

The 400-yard freestyle relay saw Lingle, Shirey, sophomore Allison Fowler (Morristown, Tenn.) and sophomore Michaela Nolte (Hillsborough, N.C.) swim a 3:43.54 for a runner-up finish to W&L.

Richardson, Nolte, Lingle, and Shirey turned in a time of 1:55.58 in the 200-yard medley relay while the 200-yard freestyle relay of Shirey, freshman Marina Moore (Thomasville, N.C.), Richardson and Nolte clocked a 1:41.43, just .12 seconds behind the Generals.

The Wasps will have their first official meet of the season on Friday, October 24 when they travel to face the Eagles of Bridgewater. The first event is scheduled to start at 5:00 p.m.
