Emory & Henry Women’s Swimming Takes Fourth At King Early Season Invitational

KINGSPORT, Tenn. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Swimming Team placed fourth out of nine teams at the King Early Season Invitational over the weekend. It was the third year in a row that the Wasps have competed in the two-day, timed finals event.

The Results
- Event 1 – 200-Yard Freestyle Relay – Senior Hope Christensen (Moroni, Utah), freshman Aida Matute Moreno (Viladecans, SPAIN), senior Peyton Helscher (Simi Valley, Calif.) and junior Mackenzie Barnett (Monroe Township, N.J.) placed fifth with a time of 1:45.87. The Wasps "B" relay was 11th.
- Event 3 – 500-Yard Freestyle – Barnett was fifth as she swam a 5:24.61. Helscher was 20th in 5:48.74, sophomore Jaxon Thurman (Ooltewah, Tenn.) placed 24th (5:56.64), junior Maggie Robinson (Canton, Ga.) was 26th (6:03.41), freshman Kursten Thomas (Marion, Va.) was 27th (6:08.28) and sophomore Madison Graham (Radford, Va.) was 30th (6:19.52).
- Event 5 – 200-Yard Individual Medley – Junior Samantha Pepevnik (Porsgrunn, NORWAY) was the runner-up in the race at 2:11.92 while senior Paige Gelenski (Boca Raton, Fla.) was 12th in 2:20.72. Matute placed 17th (2:30.63), senior Rachel Ritter (Gibsonville, N.C.) was 18th (2:34.45) and freshman Tirayan Bartlett (Woodbridge, Va.) was 20th (2:35.73).
- Event 7 – 50-Yard Freestyle – Christensen turned in a second-place finish in 24.68 seconds while Barnett was fourth in 25.52 seconds and Robinson was 16 in 27.64 seconds. Thurman, Graham and freshman Sierra Carson (Pasadena, Md.) placed 20th, 27th and 31st, respectively.
- Event 9 – 400-Yard Medley Relay – Pepevnik, Ritter, Gelenski and Christensen were fifth, finishing the race in 4:14.14 while the "B" relay placed 12th.
- Event 11 – 400-Yard Individual Medley – Pepevnik got her second second-place finish of the meet, stopping the watches in 4:44.50 while Gelenski was 11th in 5:00.28.
- Event 13 – 100-Yard Breaststroke – Christensen swam a 1:12.19 to finish fifth as Ritter was 20th in 1:17.12.
- Event 15 – 100-Yard Butterfly – Gelenski cracked the top 10 with a ninth-place finish in 1:02.80. Matute was 20th, Bartlett was 23rd and junior Bri Digby (Carrollton, Va.) was 24th.
- Event 17 – 200-Yard Freestyle – Barnett placed seventh, swimming a 2:03.05 while Robinson was 31st, Thomas was 32nd, Graham was 39th, junior Vivian Vanderpool (Elgin, Okla.) was 44th, Digby was 46th and Carson was 47th.
- Event 19 – 100-Yard Backstroke – Pepevnik took fourth place in 1:01.79 with Christensen finishing seventh (1:03.82) and Matute placing ninth (1:05.80). Helscher, Thurman and Thomas were 17th, 20th and 21st, respectively.
- Event 21 – 200-Yard Medley Relay – The relay of Pepevnik, Ritter, Gelenski and Barnett placed seventh in 1:58.27 while the "B" relay was 17th.
- Event 23 – 200-Yard Backstroke – Pepevnik picked up the win as she touched the wall in 2:09.66. Matute was eighth in 2:17.54 while Helscher was 11th (2:26.48).
- Event 25 – 100-Yard Freestyle – Barnett placed fifth (:55.59) with Christensen close behind in sixth (55.81). Robinson (25th), Thurman (28th), Thomas (30th), Bartlett (41st), Graham (43rd), Carson (46th), Vanderpool (47th) and Digby (50th) also competed in the event.
- Event 27 – 200-Yard Breaststroke – Ritter placed 14th, swimming a 2:44.93.
- Event 29 – 200-Yard Butterfly – Gelenski was seventh, turning in a time of 2:17.75.
- Event 31 – 100-Yard Individual Medley – Bartlett placed 27th in 1:11.51 while Ritter was 28th (1:12.22).
- Event 33 – 400-Yard Freestyle Relay – Christensen, Helscher, Matute, and Barnett swam a 3:53.08 to finish seventh and close out the meet while the "B" team was 17th.

Up Next
- Emory & Henry will travel to face Virginia Wesleyan University on Saturday. The first event is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
