Emory & Henry Women's Tennis Slides By Sweet Briar, 5-4, Friday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis Team (6-9, 2-5 ODAC) got an important Old Dominion Athletic Conference victory on Friday afternoon, winning 5-4 over visiting Sweet Briar College (2-7, 0-5 ODAC).

Emory & Henry got out to a 2-1 lead after the doubles segment of the contest. Sophomore Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) and freshman Sarah Vishnev (Mooresville, N.C.)  picked up an 8-3 win at number one doubles while sophomore Casey Blackburn (Richmond, Va.) and freshman Izzy Cropp (New Orleans, La.) clamed an 8-4 victory at the number three flight.

Wingate picked up a (6-1, 6-3) win at number one singles just before lightning forced a 45 minute delay in the contest. After the suspension, Vishnev completed her (6-3, 6-0) victory in the second singles matchup.

Cropp sealed the team win for E&H at number six singles, winning by a (6-1, 6-3) score. Freshman Sheyenne Cleveland (Rural Retreat, Va.) battled hard and took her match to a 10-Point Tiebreak third set, but came up just short in the end.

Emory & Henry will host Bridgewater College in ODAC play Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The contest will be played as a doubleheader with the men's team.
