BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis Team (4-0) remained perfect on the year with a 7-1 win over Bluefield College (1-5) Thursday afternoon at the Bluefield City Courts.
The Wasps opened the match with a pair of wins in the doubles portion of the match to go up 2-0. Freshman Stella Di Michele (San Remo, ITALY) and sophomore Taylor Evans (Weber City, Va.) claimed a 8-1 win at the top doubles spot while senior Alyssa Wingate (Independence, Va.) and sophomore Meredith Yeary (Knoxville, Tenn.) blanked their opponents, 8-0, at No. 2 doubles.
In singles play, Emory & Henry won every flight in which it had a player. Di Michele made her debut at the premier pairing with a 6-1, 6-0 win while Wingate won by the same score at No. 2 singles.
Evans picked up a 6-1, 6-1 result while Yeary earned a 6-2, 6-2 win at the third and fourth singles flights, respectively. The closest match of the day came at No. 5 singles as freshman Lauren Riner (Coeburn, Va.) picked up a 7-6 (3), 6-2 win.
Bluefield earned the point for No. 6 singles as Emory & Henry did not have a player in that spot.
The Wasps will have their first home match of the spring on Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. as they take on the Spirits of Salem College at Richardson Tennis Courts.
