FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis Team has seen two of its players selected to the 2014 VaSID All-State College Division teams, VaSID officials announced Monday. It is the first time that E&H players have received all-state honors since the award was created during the 2005-06 season.
Freshman Stella Di Michele (San Remo, ITALY) was named Rookie of the Year and earned All-State First-Team honors after a 16-1 (10-1 ODAC) season at No. 1 singles. She adds all-state accolades to her ODAC Rookie of the Year and All-ODAC First Team awards from a month ago.
In doubles play, Di Michele and freshman Lauren Riner (Coeburn, Va.) were selected to the All-State Second Team for their performance as the Wasps' No. 1 pairing. The duo teamed up for a 6-3 overall record, went 6-2 against league competition and was also named to the All-ODAC Second Team.
Emory & Henry finished the year with a 10-10 record, its first 10-win season since 2009, showing consistent improvement over the past four campaigns. The Wasps reached the ODAC Tournament for the first time since 2009, earning the seventh seed after being picked to finish 10th in the league.
Washington and Lee University's Sonja Meighan was named Player of the Year while Patrick Catullo of the University of Mary Washington was tabbed as Coach of the Year for the third-straight season.
The VaSID All-State teams are selected by members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors. VaSID, founded in 1983, selects teams in two divisions (University and College) for 12 sports and three single-division teams in addition to Academic All-State teams across all sports.
