Hilton Head, S.C. - Both the men's and women's tennis teams took on the Lions of Eastern Nazarene College Wednesday morning in their last matches in Hilton Head, South Carolina. The men (1-4, 0-0) played well but came up short, 9-0, against the Eastern Nazarene men's tennis team (5-2, 0-0), while the E&H women (3-2, 0-0) defeated the Lions (4-11, 2-6) by a score of 6-3. The women's team has already surpassed their win total from last season.
The pairing of Sveva Mazzari (San Remo, ITALY) and Savanna Summers (Bluff City, Va.) blew past Eastern Nazarene's one doubles team 8-1 to kick the match off. Two doubles player in a tight match and defeated the Lions 9-8 (7-5). The pairing of Katie Meade (Coeburn, Va.) and Emma Baltuskonis (San Antonio, Texas) fell at the three spot 8-4.
In one singles, Mazzari rolled past the Lions number one 6-0, 6-0. Lauren Riner (Coeburn, Va.) played in a back and forth match, but lost 6-4, 7-5. At three singles, Summers dominated her opponent with a 6-3, 6-1 victory. Kaitlyn Sheaves (Staunton, Va.) won at four singles 6-2, 6-4. Meade defeated her Eastern Nazerene counterpart at the five flight 6-1, 6-1. Baltuskonis lost 6-0, 6-0 at the six spot.
On the men's side juniors John Dalton Ferguson (Gate City, Va.) and Luke Funkhouser (Gate City, Va.) took a tough 9-7 loss at one doubles. Two doubles were blanked 8-0 by the men's Eastern Nazarene squad.
At one singles, Ferguson played in a strong match going to three sets. However, Ferguson lost 2-6, 6-0, 10-2. At two, Funkhouser lost 6-1, 6-0 and Liam Davidson (Newport News, Va.) also went down at three singles 6-1, 6-0. Andrew McClung (Roanoke, Va.) was defeated 6-2, 6-2 while James Watson-Dare (Charlotte, N.C.) went down 6-2, 6-0, at five singles, to round out the match for the Wasps.
The men and the women are on the road to start ODAC play at Shenandoah on March 19.
