FREDERICKSBURG, Va. –Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis freshman Sveva Mazzari has received yet another award. The native of San Remo, ITALY has been named the 2016 VaSID All-State Women's Tennis College Division Player of the Year. It is the second time in three years that an E&H player has been recognized as all-state.
Mazzari, the 2016 ODAC Women's Tennis Player of the Year and an All-ODAC First-Teamer, was also named to the All-State First Team. She played the entire season at both the No. 1 singles and No.1 doubles positions.
She posted an 18-1 overall record this season with her lone loss coming in the ITA South Regional Second Round to Emory University's Bridget Harding last fall. She put up a 17-0 record in dual matches including a 10-0 mark against Old Dominion Athletic Conference opponents. Mazzari finished the year as the only player in the league to post a 10-0 mark at the No. 1 singles spot.
Mazzari finished the 2015-16 campaign as the 16th-ranked player in the Atlantic South Region by the ITA. She also held a No. 12 regional ranking from the NCAA.
Emory & Henry finished the year with an 11-7 record, its second 10-win season in three years. The Wasps posted a 6-4 ODAC record, tying them for fourth after being picked to finish seventh. E&H reached the semifinals of the ODAC Tournament for the first time in program history, defeating Lynchburg College by a 5-0 score in the quarterfinals.
Averett University's Heidi Sarkkinen was tabbed as Rookie of the Year while Washington and Lee University head coach Erin Ness took Coach of the Year honors.
The VaSID All-State teams are selected by members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors. VaSID, founded in 1983, selects teams in two divisions (University and College) for 12 sports and three single-division teams in addition to Academic All-State teams across all sports.
