Emory & Henry Women's Tennis Beats Mary Baldwin And William Peace On Saturday

STAUNTON, Va. - The Emory & Henry College Women's Tennis Team (8-7) picked up a pair of wins on Saturday on the campus of Mary Baldwin University. The Wasps defeated the Fighting Squirrels by a 8-1 score to start the day and claimed a 4-0 shutout victory over William Peace University to close things out.

The Mary Baldwin Match
The match was played under Division III rules with each doubles match counting for an individual point. E&H jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the doubles portion of the contest as freshmen Sabina Chernega (Odesa, UKRAINE) and Mackenzie Graham (Tazewell, Va.) won 8-0 at No. 1.

Junior Payton Holt (Mount Ulla, N.C.) and freshman Bronwyn McAlindon (Kingsport, Tenn.) won 8-2 at No. 2 while sophomore Tess Flanigan (Marietta, Ga.) and freshman Sueanna Breedlove (Midlothian, Va.) grabbed an 8-2 win at the third flight.

In singles play, Chernega grabbed a 6-2, 5-7, 1-0 (3) win at the premier pairing as Holt won - 6-2, 6-2 - at No. 2. Sophomore Molly McMichael (Riner, Va.) defeated her opponent by a 6-1, 6-2 score at the third flight as junior Makenzie Mendler (Fuquay-Varina, N.C.) earned a 6-4, 6-3 victory at the fifth spot. McAlindon won the first set, 6-2, at No. 6 before her opponent retired.

The William Peace Match
Emory & Henry won the doubles point by taking the top flight, 6-4, on the efforts of Holt and Mendler while McMichael and freshman Ann Gray Perdue (Bluefield, Va.) claimed a 6-1 victory at No. 2.

Chernega won her second No. 1 singles match of the day - 6-3, 6-0 - while Flanigan stepped into the second flight for a 6-0, 6-3 victory. Breedlove closed out the match with an 8-7 "pro-set" victory at No 3.

Up Next
Emory & Henry will close out the season with three home matches this coming weekend. The Wasps will host Bluefield University on Friday (3 p.m.), Midway University on Saturday (noon) and Johnson & Wales (N.C.) University on Sunday (1 p.m.).
