Emory & Henry Track & Field Hosts Inaugural Meet At Food City Sports Complex Saturday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Outdoor Track & Field Teams made history on Saturday as they hosted the first ever collegiate track & field meet at the Food City Sports Complex. The Wasps saw five program records fall and a sixth established on the day as they won 17 events.

The Wasps also celebrated Senior Day prior to the start of the meet honoring five men and three women.

Top Men's Performances
- Sophomore Will Humphrey, II (Charlotte, N.C.) picked up a pair of victories in record-breaking form as he won the 100 meters in 10.33 seconds and the 200 meters in 21.55 seconds.
- Junior Gavin Lee (North Tazewell, Va.) won the hammer throw with a school-record mark of 56.99 meters and also won the discus at 47.88 meters.
- Sophomore Barlowe Branch, III (Petersburg, Va.) won the long jump with a mark of 6.83 meters and came in first in the 400 meter hurdles at :55.72.
- Sophomore Nour Nabi (Lake Ridge, Va.) established the school record in the pole vault at 2.60 meters, placing third while sophomore Joseph Ihlenburg (Roanoke, Va.) tied the program mark in the high jump at 1.85 meters for the win.
- Sophomore Heath Bowker (Salem, Va.) crossed the line first in the 400 meters with a time of :50.58 while senior Matthew Klapak (Zion Crossroads, Va.) won the 5,000 meters in 16:05.55.
- In the shot put, junior Zavery Wallace (Buena Vista, Va.) took first with a throw of 14.64 meters

Women's Top Performances
- Freshman Mia Spangler (Floyd, Va.) broke her school record in the long jump at 5.26 meters to win the event and grabbed another first-place finish in the triple jump (10.57m).
- Junior Madison Ricketts (Kingsport, Tenn.) also picked up a pair of wins, posting a :27.30 in the 200 meters and a 1:03.23 in the 400 meters.
- Freshman Tess Somervell (Chilhowie, Va.) won the pole vault with a height of 2.45 meters as senior Hope Christensen (Moroni, Utah) was first in the high jump (1.45m) and sophomore Maya Turner (Midland, Va.) won the javelin at 18.96 meters.
- Sophomore Kennedy Harris (Mineral, Va.) was the runner-up in the 800 meters, posting a school-record time of 2:26.45.

Up Next
- Emory & Henry will get the postseason started on Wednesday when it competes in the South Atlantic Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships. Lenior-Rhyne University will host the two-day meet at Irwin Belk Track in the Moretz Sports Complex.
