Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Hollins, 3-0, Tuesday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (7-5, 2-2 ODAC) picked up a three-set victory over visiting Hollins University (4-9, 1-2 ODAC) Tuesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. The Wasps won by set scores of 25-18, 25-21 and 25-21.

E&H jumped out to a 7-1 lead in the first set and never looked back. The Wasps would lead by as many as 12 points (19-7) but Hollins would try to fight its way back into the contest, scoring five straight points to make the score 19-12. E&H responded and went on to win by the 25-18 score.

The green and gold were able to get a lead to start the second set at 5-0, but the Wasps would not fall. Emory & Henry scored six of the next nine points to close the gap to 6-8. A few moments later E&H found itself down 8-12, and reeled off 12 straight points to swing the momentum in favor of the home team and take a 20-12 lead. The Wasps cruised to a 25-21 win in the set.

Both teams fought for control of the third set as there were five ties and two lead changes in the frame. Emory & Henry took advantage of two straight kills by junior outside hitter Morgan Grant (Abingdon, Va.) late in the set as the Wasps took the lead at 18-15. Hollins would not get any closer than two points the rest of the way as E&H picked up the three-set win.

Grant led the way with a match-high 11 kills and added 11 digs to complete the double-double for E&H while junior middle hitter Kimmie Caudill (Galax, Va.) had 10 kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter Fallon Davis (Mooresville, N.C.) had 36 assists while senior libero Sam Lucado (Salem, Va.) registered a team-high 13 digs.

Hollins was led by Lauren Hays who had 11 kills on the night while Jessie Deese dished out 17 assists. Simone Mendez and Morgan Russell each had 14 digs for the visitors.

Emory & Henry will take a week off from competition and will return to the court next Tuesday when it travels to Bluefield, West Virginia to face the Lady Blues of Bluefield State College. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
