Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Ferrum, 3-0, Monday

FERRUM, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (10-5) picked up its fourth straight win Monday evening as the Wasps defeated the Panthers of Ferrum College (0-17), 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-15) at Swartz Gymnasium. With the victory, E&H sweeps the season series with Ferrum.

Emory & Henry got out to a 9-3 lead early in the first set thanks in part to three service aces. Ferrum put together a run to take the lead at 15-13, but the Wasps fought back and scored 12 of the next 15 points to go on to win by a 25-18 score. Junior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) had five service aces in the frame.

Both the Wasps and the Panthers showed their abilities to put together runs in the second set. After E&H started out up 4-0, Ferrum scored five straight to claim the 5-4 advantage.  The two teams traded points back and forth until the score was tied at 21-all. The Wasps reeled off four straight points culminated by a service ace by junior middle Kimmie Caudill (Galax, Va.) to take the set.

E&H pulled out all the stops in the third set. The Wasps fed off of a five- and seven-point run in the middle of the stanza to build their lead to 17-7 and held on for the victory.

Cockerham posted 11 kills and five service aces in the match to lead Emory & Henry while junior outside hitter Morgan Grant (Abingdon, Va.) had nine kills and sophomore middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) added eight kills and three blocks. Sophomore setter Fallon Davis (Mooresville, N.C.) dished out a match-high 23 assists in the contest.

For Ferrum, Kayla Trippeer paced the offense with nine kills while Leah Quinones had 19 assists.

Emory & Henry returns home to face Washington and Lee University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Wednesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
