Emory & Henry Volleyball Gets Past Eastern Mennonite, 3-0, Sunday At Home

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (11-6, 3-3 ODAC) picked up 3-0 (25-23, 25-20, 25-18) victory over Eastern Mennonite University (5-16, 0-8 ODAC) Sunday afternoon in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play inside the King Center. With the victory, the Wasps eclipse last year's win total of 10 wins with nine more contests left in the regular season.

The first set featured eight ties and three lead changes. Emory & Henry finally took charge after a timeout at 23-21. The Wasps pushed the next four points to take the first stanza. Junior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) was a perfect five-for-five attacking as the Wasps hit .400 (13-3-25) for the set.

Emory & Henry got out to a 3-0 lead in the second frame but saw Eastern Mennonite take a 10-9 lead in the middle of the set. The Wasps went on a five-point run to go up 14-10, a lead they would not lose. E&H put together a three-point and four-point run down the stretch to take the set. Junior outside hitter Morgan Grant (Abingdon, Va.) tallied seven kills for the stanza.

The Royals jumped out to a 5-1 lead to start the third set. E&H battled back to tie the contest at eight and scored six out of seven points for a 15-11 advantage. The Wasps put together a six-point run late in the set to put the contest out of reach and held on for the 25-18 win.

Grant, junior middle Kimmie Caudill (Galax, Va.) and sophomore middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) each had nine kills in the contest for the Wasps while Cockerham finished the day with seven kills. Sophomore setter Fallon Davis (Mooresville, N.C.) dished-out 28 assists while junior right side hitter Tessa Burton (Gate City, Va.) had a team-high four service aces. Senior libero Selena Trichel (Hilton Head, S.C.) led the way with seven digs.

For Eastern Mennonite, Kyla Moorefield had a match-high 12 kills and Tabitha Bowman registered 10 kills. Mattie Lehman posted 24 assists and led all players with five service aces.

Emory & Henry will travel to Salem, Va., Wednesday to take on the Maroons of Roanoke College. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
