Covenant Volleyball Downs Emory & Henry, 3-1, Thursday Evening

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – The Covenant College Volleyball Team (17-6) picked up a non-conference victory Thursday evening over the visiting Wasps of Emory & Henry College (14-9) by a 3-1 (25-19, 21-25, 25-12, 25-18) score at the Barnes Physical Education Center.

Covenant took the first set by a 25-19 score as it hit .323 (13-3-31) for the frame. Four different Scots had three kills in the set. The two sides battled back and forth early to a 10-10 tie. Covenant then went on an 8-3 run to take control of the stanza and held on for the win.

In the second set, the Wasps took advantage of a 6-1 run in the middle of the set to go up 16-10. E&H survived a rally by Covenant that cut the lead to 20-19, going on a 5-1 run to end the set and tie the contest at one.

Covenant jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the third set and pushed their advantage to 23-10 en route to a 13-point victory. The Scots hit .444 (13-1-27) in the stanza, taking the win.

Covenant took control of the fourth stanza early and cruised to the win. Down 5-3, the Scots went on a 10-0 run to seize command. The Wasps were able to put together a pair of short scoring runs, but would not be able to overcome the deficit.

The Scots were led by Jessie Jakes and Erica Adams as the pair tallied 14 kills apiece. Kristin Dahlstrand had a double-double with 36 assists and 11 digs while Estes Carlson and Paige Cheney registered 15 and 14 digs, respectively.

Emory & Henry's offense was paced by junior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) with a career-high 23 kills, hitting .302 (23-7-53) on the night. Junior outside hitter Morgan Grant (Abingdon, Va.) had 11 kills of her own while sophomore setter Fallon Davis (Mooresville, N.C.) dished out 39 assists and added 13 digs on the contest. Senior libero Sam Lucado (Salem, Va.) notched 27 digs in the contest.

E&H will return to the court on Tuesday when it hosts the Quakers of Guilford College at 7:00 p.m. The contest will serve as senior night for the Wasps.
