Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Ferrum, 3-0, Friday To Open 2012 Season

FERRUM, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (1-0) picked up a 3-0 win to open the 2012 season over Ferrum College (0-1) at Swartz Gymnasium. The Wasps won by set scores of 25-11, 25-17 and 25-16.

The Panthers opened up a 5-2 lead to start the match but E&H went on a 14-2 run to go up by a 16-7 score. Emory & Henry put together a 6-0 run later in the set to take a 1-0 lead with a 25-11 set score.

In the second frame, the Wasps got out to a 6-1 advantage and led by as much as 10 (18-8) later in the set. Ferrum scored five straight points to close the gap to 18-13, but would get no closer the rest of the way as E&H took a two set to none lead.

The two teams battled back and forth for the first 10 points of the third stanza but then Emory & Henry went on a 11-1 run to go up 16-6. Another four-point spurt gave the Wasps a 21-8 advantage that they pushed out to 24-11. Ferrum wouldn't go down without a fight, scoring five straight points before E&H came away with the victory.

Emory & Henry was led by sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) with 25 assists while senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) had nine kills and eight digs. Junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) and freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) each posted seven kills. As a team, the Wasps hit .254 (30-12-71) for the match.

Kayla Trippeer paced the Panthers with six kills and seven digs while Leah Quinones had 12 assists.

E&H will return to the court on Saturday afternoon when it faces off against Methodist University in Averett University's Cougar Classic. First serve between the Wasps and Monarchs is set for 3:00 p.m.
