Emory & Henry Volleyball Splits A Pair Of Matches Saturday At Averett’s Cougar Invitational

DANVILLE, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (2-1) split a pair of matches at Averett University's Cougar Invitational Saturday afternoon. The Wasps defeated the Monarchs of Methodist University, 3-1 (14-25, 26-24, 25-22, 25-23), and fell to the host Averett Cougars, 3-0 (26-24, 25-8, 25-23) in the nightcap.

After falling behind 1-0 through one set, Emory & Henry scrapped out a 26-24 win in the second stanza against Methodist. The Wasps then went on the attack, hitting .219 and .205 in the third and fourth sets compared to just .143 and .139 for the Monarchs.

Emory & Henry saw three players reach double figures in kills, led by senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) with 14 kills and 12 digs to complete the double-double. Junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) had 12 kills and freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) posted 10 kills of her own. Sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) had a match-high 40 assists and junior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) registered 17 digs.

Methodist was paced by Risa Smith with 14 kills and 15 digs. Allison Graves and Karly Klimas each had 17 digs while Kendra Krupp dished-out 36 assists.

Averett 3, Emory & Henry 0
Homestanding Averett came back late in the first set to win 26-24 and seemed to be on cruise control after winning the second stanza by a 25-8 score. The Wasps didn't go down without a fight however, and pushed to the last points as the Cougars swept with a 25-23 score in the third.

Averett's Allison Sparks led all players with 19 kills and a .421 hitting percentage (19-3-38). Nicole Barringer had 38 assists while Page Aaron and Megan Sawyer posted 18 and 11 digs, respectively. 

Cockerham, senior middle Kim Caudill (Galax, Va.) and Stewart were at the forefront with nine, six and six kills, respectively. Neely had 26 assists and Stewart tallied 12 digs.

Emory & Henry will complete their schedule at the Cougar Invitational on Sunday with two matches. The Wasps will face the Pride of Greensboro College at 10:00 a.m. and the Pacers of William Peace University at noon.
