Emory & Henry Volleyball Picks Up A Pair Of Wins At Eastern Mennonite Saturday

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (9-3, 1-1 ODAC) bounced back from Friday night's setback as it picked up two wins on Saturday at Eastern Mennonite University. The Wasps defeated the Royals of Eastern Mennonite University (2-8, 0-3 ODAC), 3-0 (25-12, 25-17, 25-21), and took down Southern Virginia University (1-5) by a 3-2 (19-25, 25-19, 22-25, 25-23, 15-8) score to close out the day.

The Wasps picked up their first Old Dominion Athletic Conference win of the season, defeating the Royals of Eastern Mennonite by a 3-0 score.

Senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) led the Wasps offensively with 11 kills. Middles junior Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) had eight kills and five blocks while senior Kim Caudill (Galax, Va.) registered seven kills and five blocks as well.

E&H sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) dished-out 26 assists, seven digs, three service aces and three blocks and junior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) led the Wasps with 20 digs.

Eastern Mennonite was paced by Amber Loftin with seven kills while Mattie Lehman had 22 assists and eight digs. Katie Miller and Julyanna Anderson each notched eight digs.

For the match, Emory & Henry hit .241 (33-12-87) compared to 25-26-106 (-.009) for Eastern Mennonite. The Wasps also had 11 blocks in the match.

E&H saw three players reach double figures in kills led by Tesh (16). Cockerham had a double-double with 12 kill and 16 digs while freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) registered 14 kills in the match.

Neely had a match-high 40 assists while Kerlin added 20 digs and senior right side hitter Tessa Burton (Gate City, Va.) recording 10 digs and six kills.

Southern Virginia got 14 kills from Chelsea Lyons and 12 from Shyanne Ison.  Katelynn Tlustek had a double-double with 38 assists and 14 digs, adding seven service aces, while Jordan Geist added 10 digs of her own.

As a team, Emory & Henry hit .259 (56-19- 143) for the match while Southern Virginia attacked at a .166 (49-245-151) clip. The Wasps had 8.0 blocks while the Knights managed 6.5 stuffs.

Emory & Henry will open the home portion of its schedule on Monday when Bluefield State College visits Bob Johnson Court at the John Rutledge King Center. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
