Emory & Henry Volleyball Blanks Bluefield State, 3-0, Monday In Home Opener

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (10-3) defeated Bluefield State College (0-4) Monday evening at the John Rutledge King Center in its home opener. The Wasps defeated the Lady Blues, 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-15), for their 10th win of the season.

The match was never in question as Emory & Henry got out to a 14-5 lead early in the first set. The Wasps would lead by as much as 12 points in the set (18-6). E&H dominated the frame with a .529 (11-2-17) hitting percentage.

The Lady Blues got out to a 3-0 lead in the second set before the Wasps took control and went up by a 14-6 score. E&H had back-to-back six-point scoring runs, and finished the set on a 10-2 spurt.

E&H sealed the contest in the third set as it took a 6-0 lead and never looked back. The Wasps led by as much as 11 (23-12) before the Lady Blues scored four straight points. Emory & Henry was able to score two straight points on Bluefield State errors to take the match.

The Wasps were led by freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) with 10 kills and two service aces. Senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) and junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) each had six kills on the day. Sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) had 13 assists and six service aces while senior right side hitter Tessa Burton (Gate City, Va.) recorded four blocks.

Emory & Henry will resume Old Dominion Athletic Conference play on Wednesday when it travels to Lexington, Va. to face Washington and Lee University. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
