Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Roanoke, 3-0, Thursday On Dig Pink Night

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (13-5, 3-2 ODAC) attacked at a season-high .365 (40-9-85) for the match en route to a 3-0 (25-9, 25-22, 25-21) victory over Roanoke College (9-8, 1-5 ODAC) Thursday evening on Dig Pink night.

Roanoke got out to a 3-1 advantage in the first set, but E&H responded to take a 4-3 lead. Up 6-5, the Wasps scored six-straight points. Later in the set, Emory & Henry had a 16-9 lead late and the set and freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) served out the final nine points of the set to give the Wasps a 25-9 victory in the set. E&H hit at a .500 (13-1-24) percentage compared to just -.088 (4-7-34) clip for the Maroons.

In the second stanza, Emory & Henry found itself down 7-13 midway through the set, before it went on a 4-1 run to close the gap to 14-12. Later in the stanza, the Wasps put together a 6-2 scoring spurt to take a 22-20 lead. E&H was able to score three of the final five points of the stanza to take a 2-0 set lead.

Emory & Henry had timely scoring runs in the third set including a four-point period early in the frame. The Wasps were able to respond to each Maroon rally and took the match with a 25-21 win.

Senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) had a match-high 14 kills while Stewart had eight kills and seven digs. Middles Kim Caudill (Galax, Va.) and Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) each had seven kills with Caudill hitting at a .462 percentage. Sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) lead all players as she dished out 36 assists and had three service aces and junior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.)  had 14 digs.

Roanoke was paced by Samantha Klosterman and Rachel Kilinski with six kills apiece while Alexandra Martin had a team-high nine assists. MacKenzie Tyree picked up six digs while Macey Tyree added five digs of her own.

Emory & Henry will next take the court on Tuesday when it travels to Greensboro, N.C. to face Guilford College. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
