Maryville Volleyball Sweeps Emory & Henry, 3-0, Tuesday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The Maryville (Tenn.) College Volleyball Team (12-10) handed Emory & Henry College (14-6) its first home loss of the season Tuesday evening at Bob Johnson Court. The Scots defeated the Wasps by a 3-0 (25-22, 25-17, 25-23) score.

E&H got out to a 5-2 lead in the first set and went up by as much as 11-5 early on. Maryville then got their offense rolling and tied the contest at 15 points apiece. The Scots would lead by as much a six (24-18) before the Wasps scored four straight points to close the gap to 24-22, but Maryville would still take the first set.

In the second frame, the visitors scored the first four points of the set and never looked back as they cruised to a 25-17 win. The Scots our-hit the Wasps, .257 (13-4-35) to .000 (8-8-37), in the set.

The third and final stanza could have gone either way as it featured 15 ties and five lead changes. Neither team would lead by more than three points at any point during the third, which featured the best offensive performances of the match by both teams. With the score tied at 22, the Scots were able to score three of the next four points to edge the Wasps, 25-22, and take home the three-set victory.

Maryville was led offensively by Kristen Sharp with 12 kills while Kelsey Handel added 10 kills of her own. Teri Lind and Lauren Bonee had 22 and 15 assists, respectively, as they split the setting duties. Sharp completed her double-double with 12 digs while Kara Strickland had a match-high 19 digs in the contest.

Emory & Henry was paced by sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) with 36 assists. Junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) had 11 kills while senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) had a double-double with 10 kills and 12 digs. Junior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) posted 12 digs while senior middle Kim Caudill (Galax, Va.) added eight kills and two blocks.

The Wasps will travel to Lynchburg on Thursday to take on the WildCats of Randolph College. First serve in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference match is set for 7:00 p.m.
