Virginia Wesleyan Sweeps Emory & Henry, 3-0, Saturday Morning In ODAC Play

EMORY, Va. – The Virginia Wesleyan College Volleyball Team (19-6, 8-2 ODAC) picked up a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-21) victory over Emory & Henry College (15-9, 5-5 ODAC) Saturday morning at the John Rutledge King Center.

The two squads battled back and forth through the first part of the set. With the score tied at 12, Virginia Wesleyan went on a run to make the score 21-15. The Wasps were able to score a pair of points down the stretch, but the Marlins took the first stanza, 25-17.

VWC got out to a 5-2 lead to start the second set, but E&H was able to put together a run to tie the contest at 11 points apiece.  The score would stay tight until the late in the frame but the Marlins scored six of the final seven points to take a 25-19 win.

Emory & Henry took a 4-0 lead early in the third period, but Virginia Wesleyan regrouped to tie the contest 6-6. The third set featured 10 ties as neither team was able to take control until a four-point scoring run by the Marlins to go up 19-16. E&H would get within two points (21-23), but would get no closer as VWC closed out the contest with a pair of scores.

Kala Guy led the Marlins on the day with 11 kills and added 10 digs to complete the double-double. Taylor Allen had 10 kills while Kerry Johnson registered nine kills of her own. Mallory Slade and Krista Sessoms split the setting duties with 18 and 13 assists, respectively.

Emory & Henry was paced by freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) with nine kills, six digs and two service aces while senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) and junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) added eight kills in the match. Senior middle Kim Caudill (Galax, Va.) notched seven kills while high school teammate sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) posted a match-high 26 assists.

E&H will travel to Roanoke, Va., on Tuesday evening to take on Hollis University in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. First serve is set for 7:00 p.m.
