Concord Volleyball Sweeps Emory & Henry, 3-0, Saturday Afternoon In Non-Conference Play

EMORY, Va. – The Concord University Volleyball Team (14-13) picked up a 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-22) non-conference win over Emory & Henry College (17-10) Saturday afternoon at the John Rutledge King Center. The contest saw senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) tie the E&H record for kills in a career. Cockerham now has 901 kills in her four years as a Wasp, tied with Darcy Belcher (2000-03).

The two squads battled back and forth through the early portions of the first set. With the score tied at 12, Concord went on a 7-0 run to take control 19-12. The Mountain Lions would finish the stanza with a 6-3 scoring spurt.

Emory & Henry was able to hang with its NCAA Division II opponent early in the second set as well. A 4-0 run with the score knotted at 11 gave Concord the boost it needed. Up 20-18, three straight points by the Mountain Lions gave them a margin that would hold for the 25-20 win to go up two sets to none.

In the third frame, the Wasps came out strong and led 13-7. With the score 19-13, Concord went on a 12-3 run, tying the score 19-19, and surging ahead to win the set and the match.

The Mountain Lions were led offensively by Sarah Jones' 12 kills while Whytni and Brytni Willis added seven kills apiece. Nikki McMillan and Amanda Walker split the setting duties with 18 and 16 assists, respectively with McMillan completing the double-double with 12 digs. Lindsey Smith led all players with 13 digs.

Cockerham led Emory & Henry with 14 kills and three service aces while junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) and senior middle Kim Caudill (Galax, Va.) added eight and six kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) had a match-high 21 assists and junior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) registered 10 digs.

Emory & Henry will next take the court on Wednesday, October 31 in the quarterfinals of the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament. The Wasps will be on the road, facing an opponent which will be named by the league office on Sunday.
