Emory & Henry Volleyball Earns Sixth Seed For 2012 ODAC Tournament

FOREST, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball team has earned the number six seed for the 2012 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament, ODAC officials announced late Saturday night. With a 17-10 overall record and a 6-5 mark in league play, the Wasps have solidified back-to-back winning seasons.

By virtue of finishing sixth in the ODAC regular season, E&H will travel to face third-seeded Bridgewater College on Wednesday evening in the quarterfinals of the ODAC Tournament. First serve between the Wasps and Eagles is set for 7:00 p.m.

Bridgewater finished in a three-way tie with Lynchburg College and Virginia Wesleyan College for third place and league officials needed to go to the fourth tiebreaker (set differential among tied teams) to separate the squads. Bridgewater was "+1" in set differential, while Lynchburg and Virginia Wesleyan were "even" and "-1," respectively.

In the regular season meeting between the two squads, Bridgewater came away with a 3-1 victory with set scores of 23-25, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-17. Katie Long and Cadie Castle registered 17 and 12 kills, respectively to lead the Eagles' offense while Lindsay Kallam and Kylie Graham split the setting duties and combined for 37 assists. Casey O'Leary had a match-high 12 digs while Megann Grimes added eight kills and five blocks in the contest.

Emory & Henry put three players in double figures in kills, led by senior outside hitter Jamie Cockerham (Galax, Va.) with 12 kills and 10 digs to complete the double-double in addition to three service aces. Freshman outside hitter Hannah Stewart (Boone, N.C.) had 10 kills and 10 digs with high school teammate junior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) had 11 kills and two service aces of her own. Sophomore setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) led all players with 33 assists in the contest.

The Eagles hit .285 (57-22-123) as a team, compared to just .192 (43-20-120) for the Wasps. Bridgewater won the serving battle with a +1 aces/errors margin with Emory & Henry turning in a -1 margin. BC was tougher at the net as well, outblocking E&H 8-4.

The winner of Wednesday's contest will face the winner of the Washington and Lee-Roanoke match on Saturday, November 3 at a site and time yet to be determined.
