#3 Lynchburg Eliminates Sixth-Seeded Emory & Henry, 3-0, In ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals

LYNCHBURG, Va. – The third-seeded Lynchburg College Volleyball Team (13-12) advanced to the semifinals of the 2013 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Tournament with a 3-0 (25-18, 25-21, 25-19) victory over #6 Emory & Henry College (15-13) Wednesday evening at Turner Gym.

Lynchburg got out to a 1-0 lead after the first set. The Hornets used four serving runs of three or more points en route to a 25-18 win, thanks in part to eight service aces. The set was tied at 14 points each but LC ran the score to 20-15 before finishing out the frame.

In the second stanza, E&H found itself down by a 5-2 score but rattled off five straight points to take a 7-5 lead. Freshman outside hitter Kennady Thomason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) notched five kills in the set and Emory & Henry was able to close the gap to 23-21 after falling behind, but Lynchburg closed things out for a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Wasps got up 5-3 in the third set but a 7-0 run by the Hornets including two service aces got the margin to 10-5 in the favor of the home team. E&H tied things up a 13 and again at 14 and 15, but a three-point spurt by LC claimed momentum and the match.

Jennifer Garrett led all players with nine kills while Sierra Strathy had eight kills and three blocks for Lynchburg. Gabby Myers dished-out 30 assists and added nine digs and six service aces while Sam Page had 15 digs.

Thomason paced the Emory & Henry attack with eight kills on 23 swings (.304) and four blocks while senior middle Nicole Tesh (Boone, N.C.) tallied seven kills in the final match of her career. Tesh's school record for kills in a career stands at 969. Freshman outside hitters Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) and Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.) notched six and five kills respectively.

Junior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) registered 23 assists and 11 digs while senior libero Kelly Mae Kerlin (Franklin, Tenn.) had a match-high 19 digs and added two aces.

Emory & Henry will now await the release of the All-ODAC Teams which will come next week after the conclusion of the conference tournament.
