Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Shenandoah, 3-0, Wednesday In ODAC Road Test

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (11-8, 3-3 ODAC) evened its record in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play Wednesday evening with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-18) win over Shenandoah University (12-8, 3-3 ODAC) at Shingleton Gym.

The opening set went back and forth before the Wasps took an 18-17 lead. Thanks to five straight points, E&H went up 23-18 and held on, 25-22, after a push by SU to take the set. The second frame was more of the same, featuring 16 ties and eight lead changes. Neither team was able to get control until Emory & Henry called a timeout down 22-11. The Wasps went on to score the final five points of the set and take a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third stanza, both squads had opportunities to set the tone early as the score would be knotted at 11 midway through. E&H scored four-straight points and never looked back as it went on to claim the 25-18 win and the important league victory.

The Wasps hit .225 (35-15-89) as a team for the match and added seven service aces and seven blocks. Sophomore outside hitter Tristen Pennington (Kingsport, Tenn.) led all players with 10 kills and added four service aces and seven digs. Sophomore middle Kennady Thomason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and sophomore right side Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.) both tallied seven kills with doss adding three blocks. Senior setter Maleah Neely (Hillsville, Va.) put up 25 assists and 11 digs for the double-double while sophomore libero Emily Hinshaw (Boone, N.C.) collected a match-high 15 digs.

Shenandoah attacked just a 33-21-98 (.122) clip for the match and fell victim to nine service errors. Rachel Gross had eight kills, 11 digs and three service aces while Allie Pieper added eight kills and five blocks for the Hornets. Jasmine Callahan put up 29 assists in the match while Blake Parkes and Kaitlyn Kelley added five kills apiece.

Emory & Henry will remain on the road this weekend when it travels to Aston, Pa., on the outskirts of Philadelphia for a three-match slate in the Knights Fall Classic hosted by Neumann University. The Wasps will get things started on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m., when they take on the Bears of Ursinus College.
