Emory & Henry Volleyball Blanks Hollins, 3-0, Wednesday In ODAC Action

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (12-12, 4-5 ODAC) made quick work of Hollins University (3-18, 0-9 ODAC) by way of a 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 25-12) victory Wednesday evening in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action at Bob Johnson Court.

The two teams went back and forth to a 12-12 tie in the first set before Emory & Henry opened up a 16-12 lead and went on another 4-1 run to go up 20-13. Hollins cut the margin to three, 21-18, before the Wasps finished things out with four straight points.

Early in the second set, the squads traded two-point runs, knotting the score at seven, before the Wasps ran off four points in a row to lead 11-7. E&H extended its lead though out the second half of the frame, going up 23-14 late before HU scored four of the next five to make the score 24-18. A kill by junior right-side hitter Hannah Doss (Meadowview, Va.) put Emory & Henry over the top for the 2-0 lead in the match.

The Wasps dominated from the outset of the third stanza and attacked at a .567 (18-1-30) clip for their best hitting percentage of the night. E&H posted scoring runs of five and four points midway through the set to go up 15-7 and increased their lead through the final half as it cruised to the 25-12 win and take the match.

Sophomore outside hitter Ali Singleton (Mount Jackson, Va.) had 11 kills on 17 attempts with just one error for a .588 hitting percentage. She posted nine kills in the first two sets alone. Freshman middle Kate Franklin (Blountville, Va.) matched Singleton's offensive effort exactly, recording six kills on seven swings (.857) in the third set.

Doss and junior middle Kennady Thomason (Chattanooga, Tenn.) each had nine kills and hitting percentages over .400 as Thomason added three blocks and Doss chipped in 11 digs and two service aces. Freshman setter Sam McCauley (Glade Spring, Va.) had 29 assists while junior libero Emily Hinshaw (Boone, N.C.) notched a match-high 14 digs to go along with two aces.

Hollins saw Deja Hadden put up eight kills while Jordan Persinger added four kills and a block. Lela Moore had 14 assists and seven digs while Haley Ortiz notched nine digs.

As a team, Emory & Henry hit .368 (49-14-95) for the match and had 10 service aces and three blocks, while Hollins was limited to just .081 (17-11-74) on its attack and managed just two aces and two blocks.

E&H will remain at home this weekend when it plays host to Shenandoah University and Bluefield College in a tri-match. The Wasps will take on the Hornets in ODAC play at noon, with the Hornets and the Lady Rams set to play at 2:00 p.m. Emory & Henry will cap the day against Bluefield at 4:00 p.m.
