FOREST, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team, under the direction of fourth-year Head Coach Devyn Bayes, has been picked eighth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference Preseason Poll, ODAC officials announced Monday. The poll is voted on by the 12 head coaches in the league.
In 2016, the Wasps went 16-13 with a 6-5 record against ODAC opponents to finish tied for fifth place. E&H returns second-team all-conference performer in senior outside hitter Ali Singleton (Mount Jackson, Va.) but will have to replace four All-ODAC picks in Tristen Pennington, Kennady Thomason, Hannah Doss and Emily Hinshaw, all of whom graduated in May.
“We will most definitely miss our graduated seniors, but we are excited to welcome in an experienced class this fall,” commented Bayes. “Adding in a few transfers to our returners will help as we look to exceed our preseason ranking this fall.”
Randolph-Macon College sits atop the poll with 10 first-place votes while Washington and Lee University and Bridgewater College are second and third, respectively, garnering the other two top nods. Virginia Wesleyan University and Lynchburg College are fourth and fifth, separated by just two points while Guilford College and Roanoke College are tied for sixth.
Emory & Henry will get the 2017 season started with four matches in the Marietta Invitational on Friday, September 1 and Saturday, September 2. The Wasps’ first home contest of the season will be on Tuesday, September 5 when they welcome the Panthers of Ferrum College to the John Rutledge King Center for a 7:00 p.m. match.
