Emory & Henry Volleyball Sweeps Mars Hill In SAC Play Sunday Afternoon

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (5-10, 2-6 SAC) picked up its second South Atlantic Conference victory of the season on Sunday afternoon as it earned a clean sweep of Mars Hill University (8-5, 4-4 SAC). The Wasps defeated the Lions by scores of 25-19, 25-14 and 25-19.

How It Happened

- The Lions held a narrow 7-6 advantage in the early stages, but the Wasps rattled off seven consecutive points to jump ahead. E&H pushed its lead out to as many as ten in the opening set and held off a late Mars Hill rally to take the first frame 25-19.

- E&H was once again the aggressor in the second stanza as they held a 15-11 at the midway point. The Wasps finished the set on a 10-3 run as they took the win by an eleven-point margin. The home team posted an attack percentage of .321 en route to the second-set victory. 

- The third set was a closer affair and the score stood at 16-15 in favor of the Wasps. E&H turned up the pressure in the closing stages of the set and put away the visiting Lions on an emphatic kill from freshman outside hitter Grace Duey (Tega Cay, S.C.) to clinch the set and the match 25-19.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Duey paced the Wasps' attack with ten kills and a pair of blocks while senior outside hitter Brianna Hogan (Front Royal, Va.) posted nine kills, three digs and two blocks. Freshman right-side hitter Marli Watkins (Knoxville, Tenn.) had a career-high seven kills, two digs, two blocks and an assist.

- Sophomore setter Payton Rolfsen (Fort Wayne, Ind.) had a match-high 33 assists, seven digs, three service aces, three kills and two blocks. Senior libero Libby Bickelhaupt (Fort Myers, Fla.) contributed a match-high 15 digs, five assists and a service ace in the winning effort for the home team.

Mars Hill Individual Leaders
- Jada Cannon had a match-high 12 kills and three digs. Timmons Yates posted eight kills and four digs while Katilyn Grant seven kills, one dig and a service ace.

- Jordan Schmucker contributed a team-high 23 assists, nine digs and a block in the loss.

- Emory & Henry steps out of conference play on Tuesday, October 10 when it makes the trip to Winston-Salem, N.C. to take on the Rams of Winston-Salem State University. First serve is scheduled for 6:00 p.m. from Whitaker Gymnasium.
