Emory & Henry Volleyball Drops Five-Set Heartbreaker To Carson-Newman Friday Night

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Volleyball Team (8-15, 4-9 SAC) fell in five sets to South Atlantic Conference opponent Carson-Newman University (12-14, 9-5 SAC) Friday night. The Lady Eagles topped the Wasps by scores of 21-25, 25-22, 25-20, 18-25 and 15-9. The match also served as Senior Day for graduating player Samantha Worthy (Arden, N.C.)

How It Happened
- The match started even through the early stages as the two teams were level at 9-9. The Wasps would open up a cushion through the midpoint and establish a 19-13 advantage. The Lady Eagles battled back within two at 21-19, but E&H settled in and clinched the opening-set win by a 25-21 margin.
- The Wasps began the second frame the same way they ended the first as they ran out to a 13-5 lead. E&H continued to increase their out to eight at 17-9. C-N responded by winning eight consecutive points to tie the match at 17-17. The Wasps would push back ahead 21-19 before the visitors won six of the final seven points to even the match with a 25-22 set victory.
- E&H started the third on the front foot as they established a narrow 10-9 lead. The Lady Eagles once again responded with four straight points and nine of the following 13 to jump ahead 18-14. C-N did not look back throughout the rest of the set as they posted an attack percentage of .406 to take a two sets to none lead by a 25-20 score.
- The Wasps once again rebounded to start the fourth set as they were first to 15 with a six-point advantage. E&H continued to increase the pressure in the second half of the fourth set and reached set point at 24-18. Worthy recorded a big solo block to clinch the set 25-18 and send the match to a deciding fifth set.
- Both teams traded points at the start of the fifth set and the score was all square at 6-6. The Lady Eagles took control down the stretch as they won nine of the final 12 points to take the set and match by a 15-9 score.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Senior outside hitter Brianna Hogan (Front Royal, Va.) led the Wasps' offensive attack with 18 kills and a dig while sophomore outside hitter Julissa Hopgood (Lutz, Fla.) contributed 16 kills, five digs, three digs and an assist. Senior middle Hannah Watson (Kingsport, Tenn.) posted eight kills, four blocks and a dig.
- Sophomore setter Payton Rolfsen (Fort Wayne, Ind.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season as she had a match-high 46 assists, 14 digs, three kills and a pair of service aces. Worthy finished with four kills, three blocks, three digs and an assist.

Carson-Newman Individual Leaders
- Julia Wheeler paced the Lady Eagles with 22 kills, 12 digs, two blocks, an assist and a service ace. Taylor Adams posted 18 kills, three digs and a block while Taylor Keeran posted eight kills, five blocks and a pair of digs.
- Blair Cherry led C-N with 33 assists, 18 digs, seven kills and a service ace. Carlee Allbaugh had 23 assists and five digs in the winning effort.

- Emory & Henry makes the short trip on Tuesday, October 31 to take on southwest Virginia rivals the University of Virginia's College at Wise. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the David J. Prior Convocation Center.
