How It Happened
- The Wolves were hot out of the gate, as they were first to 15 points and held a four-point advantage. Newberry maintained its lead throughout the remainder of the set and took the opening-frame victory 25-19.
- Newberry took another early 12-9 advantage in the second, but the Wasps rattled off ten consecutive points to take a commanding 19-12 lead. The Wolves rallied to draw within just two points at 23-21, but back-to-back kills from junior defensive specialist Grace Nelson (Murphy, N.C.) and senior outside hitter Brianna Hogan (Front Royal, Va.) clinched the set and evened the match by a 25-21 scoreline.
- The Wasps ran out to a 7-2 margin early in the third set, forcing a Newberry timeout. The Wolves battled back out of the break to even the match at 9-9 and E&H had to burn a timeout of their own to stop the momentum. The two teams continued to trade points back-and-forth throughout the second half of the third set and first to 25 would not be enough. - E&H was the aggressor in the fourth set, as the Wasps held a 17-13 through the middle of the frame. The Wasps opened up a four-point cushion to set up match point and Hogan powered down a kill to clinch the set and the match 25-20.
