University of Charleston (W.Va.) Volleyball Upends Emory & Henry, 3-1, Saturday Evening

EMORY, Va. – The University of Charleston (W.Va.) Volleyball Team (21-6) defeated Emory & Henry University (4-19) in four sets in non-conference play Saturday evening. The Golden Eagles earned the win by set scores of 25-15, 22-25, 25-15 and 25-13.

How It Happened
- The two teams were all square at 5-5 to begin the set, but a quick 4-0 spurt from the Wasps gave them the early upperhand. The Golden Eagles responded to draw within a pair at 12-10, then went on a 12-1 run to give themselves breathing room at 22-13. E&H trimmed the deficit to seven, but the visitors closed the opening frame on a 3-0 run to take the win 25-15.
- It was a back-and-forth affair to start the second stanza and the Wasps clung to a narrow 10-7 advantage. The squads continued to trade points through the middle stages of the set and E&H held the lead at 14-12. A quick 5-2 run from the Wasps pushed their lead back out to five but once again Charleston rallied with six of the next eight points to close within one at 21-20. The Wasps steadied the ship to reach set point and fifth-year right side Brianna Hogan (Front Royal, Va.) recorded a service ace to even the match at 1-1 with the 25-22 set win.
- The Golden Eagles were on fire to begin the third frame, taking nine of the first 10 points and held a 15-7 lead at the midpoint. E&H posted wins on five of the following six points to reduce the deficit to four at 16-12. Charleston went on another run in the latter stages of the frame as they took nine of the final 12 available points to jump back ahead in the match with the 25-15 set victory.
- UC picked up where they left off to start the fourth, sprinting out to another 7-2 lead. The Wasps slowly began to play their way back in the set and trimmed the gap to three at 10-7. The score stood at 14-10 in favor of the visitors midway through the frame until Charleston rattled off seven straight points to take firm control. The Golden Eagles closed out the set and the match by a 25-13 final.

Emory & Henry Individual Leaders
- Hogan led the way for the Wasps with her second career double-double as she posted 10 kills, 10 digs, three blocks and a service ace. Junior outside hitter Julissa Hopgood (Lutz, Fla.) added eight kills, eight digs and two blocks. Sophomore front row Grace Duey (Tega Cay, S.C.) finished the evening with seven kills, three blocks and an assist while junior middle Gracyn Miller (Lilburn, Ga.) recorded three kills, six blocks and a dig.
- Senior libero Grace Nelson (Murphy, N.C.) registered a team-high 18 digs and three assists while freshman setter Zoie Pace (Collinsville, Va.) had her first career double-double with a career-high 17 assists, 10 digs, one kill and a service ace. 

Charleston Individual Leaders
- Emma Shepherd had a monster night as she led all players with a double-double of a match-high 23 kills, 13 digs, one block and a service ace. Riley Hoff contributed 14 kills, nine digs, two service aces and an assist while Patrycja Majos had eight kills, four digs, two blocks and a service ace.
- Chloe Burton had a team-high 25 assists, 12 digs and a service ace while Abby Avila added 18 assists, seven digs and a service ace.

- Emory & Henry continues its homestand on Wednesday, November 6 when they play host to Southwest Virginia rival the University of Virginia's College at Wise. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. from the John Rutledge King Center.
