Andreia Langley Returns To NCWWC National Championships This Weekend

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa. –  For the second time in as many years of existence, the Emory & Henry College Women's Wrestling Team has seen one of its athletes qualify for nationals. Senior Andreia Langley (Chilhowie, Va.) returns to the National Collegiate Women's Wrestling Championships to represent the Wasps this weekend. This year's championship will be held at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids, Iowa and represents the first time in NCWWC history that a neutral venue has been selected for the National Championship meet.

Last year, Langley earned her spot on the national stage with a third-place finish at the NCWWC Southeast Region Championships at 191 pounds. She went 1-2 in three bouts at the national meet, finishing tied for ninth, one round away from All-America accolades.

This year, Langley was the Southeast Region Runner-Up at 155 pounds. She has a season record of 16-13, including a 12-8 mark with nine pins at 155. She also has a third-place finish at the Wasps Open in December as well as taking fourth place at the Adrian Open (170 pounds) and tying for fifth place at the Tornado Open and the Limestone Open.

For the NCWWC National Championships, each weight class is allocated a total of 20 slots with four wrestlers coming from each of the country's five regions. Langley will face off against number-four nationally-ranked Malea Palahniuk of North Central College in the second round when action begins on Friday.

The tournament will be contested as a double-elimination event with wrestlers reaching the consolation semifinals guaranteed an extra match to determine the top eight.

Additionally, the NCWWC Executive Committee announced on Thursday, March 2 that the sport of women's wrestling has reached the emergins sport threshold of 40 institutions. For the 2022-23 season, 43 teams from Divisions I, II and III have met the appropriate divisional bylaw goals. With this critical milestone now accomplished, the NCAA will now consider women's wrestling for a National Collegiate Championship.
