Emory & Henry Women’s Wrestling Hosts Wasps Open Friday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry College Women's Wrestling Team closed out the first half of its season by hosting the third annual Wasps Open on Friday at the John Rutledge King Center. The Wasps saw six of their 12 wrestlers finish in the top four of their respective weight classes.

101-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Haley Viars (King William, Va.) went 2-2 in pool play earning a win by fall in 43 seconds and a 10-0 win by technical superiority in 1:27. In her placement match, Viars lost by fall in 18 seconds to Grace York of Presbyterian College to finish fourth.
- Freshman Mallory Howard (Millington, Tenn.) went 0-4 in Pool B but responded to win her placement match in 1:41 by fall over Kikilia Powell from The Apprentice School to finish ninth.

116-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Natalia Sanchez (Powhatan, Va.) was 1-2 in Pool B earning a 10-0 technical superiority win in 1:11. She went 2-0 in the finals, winning the semifinals by technical superiority over Ava Weibley of York (Pa.) College (:20) and taking fifth place with a pin of Graclyn Hanson from Bluefield State University in 40 seconds.

123-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Madison Wilson (Henrico, Va.) went 0-2 on the day, losing her pair of bouts by fall to finish tied for seventh.

130-Pound Weight Class
- Sophomore Ava Thomas (Stafford, Va.) opened the day with a loss by fall but redeemed herself in her consolation bout with a 10-0 win, taking down Calista Gibson in 1:13.

143-Pound Weight Class
- Junior Skie Roulo (Chesterfield, Va.) got the day started with a win by fall in 33 seconds before losing her semifinal bout. Roulo took third place overall, with a 10-3 decision over Maura White of York.

155-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Molly Keller (Fairlawn, Va.) won in the quarterfinals by a 10-0 technical superiority (2:01). She bested Oliva Schwender of King (Tenn.) University in 1:00 in the semifinals and took the championship with a pin of Marymount University's Kaylee Anderson in 51 seconds.
- Freshman Natalie Giocondo (Dumfries, Va.) lost her opening round bout by fall and exited the tournament in the consolation semifinals by fall.

170-Pound Weight Class
- Sophomore Katie Gakin (Aberdeen, Wash.) went 3-1 in a round-robin format winning by fall (2:08), technical superiority (12-1) and decision (5-2) to finish second.

191-Pound Weight Class
- Sophomore Eryn Hubble (Leesburg, Va.) won her first two bouts over Shannah Archuleta (Emmanuel (Ga.)) and Muntaha Khan (Marymount) by fall in 3:42 and 0:24 respectively. She lost in the semifinals to Presbyterian's Ella Beam but claimed third overall with a victory over teammate Ella Tallent in the third-place match (10-0).
- Sophomore Ella Tallent (Dandridge, Tenn.) made it to the semifinals, winning her first round bout by forfeit and picking up a 33-second pin of Megan Pendergrass of Bluefield State. She lost in the semifinals by fall and took fourth in the event to teammate Eryn Hubble.
- Sophomore Brittney Reed (Sandston, Va.) went 2-1 on the day, earning a win by fall over Archuleta in the consolation semifinals in 1:46 and took the consolation championship by forfeit.
