Emory & Henry Women’s Wrestling Places Second At SVU Open Saturday

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Behind a trio of first-place finishes, the Emory & Henry College Women's Wrestling Team finished second as a team at the inaugural SVU Open on Saturday. The Wasps also saw a pair of their wrestlers finish as runner-up.

109-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Haley Viars (King William, Va.) lost her quarterfinal bout by decision. She dropped another contest in the consolation semifinals but earned a fifth-place finish with a pin of teammate Mallory Howard in 4:04.
- Freshman Mallory Howard (Millington, Tenn.) placed sixth, suffering a trio of losses by fall.

116-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Natalia Sanchez (Powhatan, Va.) took first place with a pair of 10-0 technical superiority wins against Mallory McDonald of Mount Olive.

123-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Madison Wilson (Henrico, Va.) went 0-4 on the day suffering three losses by pin and one by decision to finish fifth.

130-Pound Weight Class
- Sophomore Ava Thomas (Stafford, Va.) won her first two bouts by fall, handling Ashley Asselin from Liberty (1:27) and SVU's Andrea Castro (1:14) to advance to the championship bout. She finished as the runner-up, losing in 3:42 to Brielle Bilba from Mount Olive.

143-Pound Weight Class
- Junior Skie Roulo (Chesterfield, Va.) opened the event with a pin of Anna-Mari Servin of Liberty in 52 seconds. She earned a 14-4 technical superiority win against Claudia Keanini also from Liberty and pinned Mount Olive's Skyelar Smith in 4:59 to clinch the championship.

155-Pound Weight Class
- Freshman Molly Keller (Fairlawn, Va.) advanced to the championship bout with wins by pin over Alexandra Kotliarov (17 seconds) and Kaylee Anderson (3:26), both from Marymount. In the final, she lost a 10-1 decision to Mount Olive's Nia Miranda to finish second.
- Freshman Mak Robinson (Spotsylvania, Va.) went 2-2 on the day to place sixth. She earned wins over Cypress Holmes (10-0) and Mackenzie Yates (12-9) both of Liberty but took a pair of defeats by fall against Mount Olive's Jocelyn Mattingly to bookend the day.

170-Pound Weight Class
- Sophomore Katie Gakin (Aberdeen, Wash.) earned a pair of victories by fall over Savannah Bramhall in 1:48 and Aleksandra Bieszczad in 2:42 from Mount Olive to take first place.

- Emory & Henry visits No. 3 King University for a doubleheader on Wednesday evening. The women will face the Lady Tornado at 6:00 p.m., followed by the men's match at 7:00 p.m.
