Emory & Henry Women’s Wrestling Places Eighth At Home Tournament Friday

EMORY, Va. – The Emory & Henry University Women's Wrestling Team hosted the third annual Wasps Women's Open on Friday at the John Rutledge King Center. As a team, the Wasps finished eighth out of 16 squads.

Sophomore Molly Keller (Fairlawn, Va.) went 4-1 on the day to finish third at 145 pounds while senior Skie Rice (Chesterfield, Va.) posted a 3-2 mark, taking fourth at 180 pounds.

117-Pound Weight Class
Sophomore Natalia Sanchez (Powhatan, Va.) lost by fall to Annika Lopez from D'Youville in her first bout of the day in 1:35 but bounced back to defeat East Stroudsburg's Alanna Barberio in 48 seconds. Sanchez made an early exit due to an injury.

138-Pound Weight Class
Freshman Alex Costello (Johnson City, Tenn.) lost by superiority in the opening round by an 11-0 score in 3:22 to Ruth Rivera of East Stroudsburg. She exited the event in the second consolation round, dropping a 13-4 decision to Cumberlands' (Ky.) Oriyana Castex.

145-Pound Weight Class
Sophomore Molly Keller (Fairlawn, Va.) started the day with a win by fall in 23 seconds over Maison Calloway from Marymount and advanced to the semifinals, defeating East Stroudsburg's Paityn Delong by superiority, 10-0, in 1:07. In the semifinals, Keller suffered a loss by fall to NAIA No. 7-ranked NAIA Josseline Campos in 37 seconds.

In the consolation bracket, Keller grabbed a pair of victories by superiority over Angelina Hiller from East Stroudsburg (10-0; 3:08) and Presbyterian's Lilly Luttrell (10-0; 4:23) to take third place.

Sophomore Natalie Giocondo (Dumfries, Va.) won her first bout of the day by injury. She lost to Presbyterian's Paige Wehrmeister by technical superiority, 12-0 (0:56). Giocondo completed her day, losing by fall to Angelina Hiller from East Stroudsburg in 1:14.

160-Pound Weight Class
Freshman Rihana Carson (Roanoke, Va.) lost both of her bouts by fall. She dropped her opening round to Jocelyn Yepez from Emmanuel (Ga.) in 59 seconds before concluding action in the event by way of a pin from Ida Pellei of The Apprentice School (3:47).

180-Pound Weight Class
Senior Skie Rice (Chesterfield, Va.) got her day started with a 10-0 superiority win in 2:35 against Riley Wentlet from D'Youville. She dispatched Presbyterian's Lexi Fornshell in 2:21 by fall to advance to the semifinals. Rice suffered a defeat (0:49) to unattached wrestler, Nile Jernigan, but bounced back in the consolation semifinals to pin D'Youville's Zoe Kip in 2:08. Rice finished fourth in the tournament, following a 14-4 setback to Kascidy Garren from Presbyterian in 4:42 in the third-place bout.

Emory & Henry will return to action in the new year at the Red Lady Open, hosted by Huntingdon College on Saturday, January 4.
