Emory & Henry Women’s Cross Country Wins Newberry Invitational Saturday

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The Emory & Henry University Men's & Women's Cross Country Teams posted a pair of team victories and also saw runners earn medalist honors at the Newberry Invitational on Saturday. The meet served as the de facto preview meet for the South Atlantic Conference Championship which will also take place at Newberry later this month.

The Women – 5K (3.11 miles)
   Junior Delaney Eller (Salem, Va.) bested the field by 35 seconds to earn her first collegiate victory, covering the 5K course in 19:30 while sophomore Kennedy Harris (Mineral, Va.) was sixth in 21:09.
   Junior Elise McKinney (Church Hill, Tenn.) and sophomore McKenzie Tate (Wytheville, Va.) added top 10 finishes, placing eighth (21:26) and 10th (21:41), respectively.
   Freshman Tess Somervell (Chilhowie, Va.) ran a 22:23 to place 13th and round out the Wasps' scoring runners as sophomores Hannah Rosen (Falls Church, Va.), Maya Turner (Midland, Va.) and Maddy Fiscus (Crockett, Va.) were 16th, 18th and 19th to put eight athletes in the top 20.
   The Wasps were the team champion while The Citadel was second and Belmont Abbey College placed third. Emily Pierontoni from The Citadel placed second behind Eller in 20:05.

The Men – 8K (4.97 miles)
   Senior Matthew Klapak (Zion Crossroads, Va.) grabbed the win in 26:04, 15 seconds clear of the next runner while junior Miles Baldwin (Willis, Va.) was third in 27:05.
   Junior Samuel Tindall (Fort Defiance, Va.) ran a 27:14 to put three E&H runners in the top five as sophomore Davis Norman (Salem, Va.) was sixth in 27:25. Freshman Donald Mullins, Jr. (Vinton, Va.) took 13th (28:25) as the final scoring runner for the Wasps.
   Junior Tommy Henzey, IV (Salem, Va.) and sophomore Aidan Trautman (Centreville, Md.) posted top 25 finishes, crossing the line in 21st and 24th place, respectively.
   Klapak's closest competitor was Nathan Gallman from Belmont Abbey, who ran a 26:19. The Crusaders finished second in the meet as a team while The Citadel was third.

Emory & Henry returns to action in its final meet of the regular season on Saturday, October 19 when it competes in the Roanoke Invitational at Green Hill Park in Salem, Virginia.
